Beloit College Powerhouse - Beloit WI

The Beloit College Powerhouse, designed by Studio Gang, is an adaptive reuse project, transforming a former coal power plant into a combined student union and recreation center. Situated on the Rock River, the design integrates historic elements with new construction, including a translucent field house that glows in the evening. Originally built in phases between 1908 and 1947, the building retains architectural features and industrial equipment from its past. Inside, a suspended three-lane running track is woven through the building, which includes a competition swimming pool, fitness center, gathering spaces, and an auditorium. The project connects the college campus to the riverfront with a pedestrian bridge across a busy road.
