The St. Louis Art Museum East Building is a restrained, elegant addition to the original 1904 Cass Gilbert building in Forest Park. Designed by David Chipperfield Architects with landscape architect Michel Desvigne, the building minimizes its visual impact at a distance while providing expanded gallery space. The single-story pavilion, clad in dark polished concrete with local aggregates, features a coffered ceiling and large windows that offer views of the surrounding park and sculpture garden. The north-facing main entrance, with prominent landscaping, required an early morning shoot in the summer to optimize lighting conditions.
